Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur has no shortage of group gîtes, rooms for hire and group centres, and some of them make really lovely retreat venues. There are bastides among the lavender fields in the Luberon or Haute-Provence, estates surrounded by olive trees in the Var and, for mountain retreats, chalets in the Hautes-Alpes. The quiet and the light of the hinterland suit all kinds of practice: yoga, meditation, qi gong, tai chi, tantra.
Avignon and Aix-en-Provence are under three hours from Paris by TGV. Marseille and Nice have international airports, which helps when part of the group is flying in from abroad. Most venues are about an hour's drive from these stations, so plan a shuttle or car sharing and mention the journey in your programme.
Summer is high season. It's very hot and prices go up. For a retreat, May, June and September are more pleasant, and venues have more dates free. In spring everything is in flower; in September the countryside is still golden and the days are long.
Good to know
- In summer, look higher up (Hautes-Alpes, Alpes-de-Haute-Provence) or for a venue with a pool.
- Bastides often have a large vaulted room: check how much usable floor space there is for your mats.
