Maison Chalendeix: a spacious vacation rental and workspace in the heart of the Limousin countryside!
Maison Chalendeix welcomes you to a large-capacity cottage (12 people) for a peaceful, relaxing, simple, and authentic stay, surrounded by woods and meadows. It is a magical place, nestled in the heart of a pristine environment, free from noise, visual, or light pollution. Here, you can recharge your batteries, often marveling at sunset as shy deer, playful foxes, majestic buzzards, and tawny owls pass by.
A relaxing getaway just a stone's throw from Lake Vassivière!
Maison Chalendeix is located at an elevation of 540 meters, in the heart of the Limousin region, within the Regional Nature Park, at the junction of the Haute-Vienne, Creuse, and Corrèze departments, on the lower slopes of the Millevaches Plateau, known for its beautiful hiking trails. It is 10 minutes from the sublime Lake Vassivière, 5 minutes from Eymoutiers—a charming little medieval town on the Way of St. James where you’ll find all the amenities you need—10 minutes from Beaumont-du-Lac, and 20 minutes from Peyrat-le-Château. Our region is gentle, peaceful, and on a human scale—modest despite its countless treasures and rich history. We would be delighted to share our experiences, our knowledge of the historical and cultural heritage and local lifestyle, our enthusiasm for living in this beautiful region, and to help you discover our little secrets! We live on-site and will be happy to answer any questions you may have.
A charmingly renovated farmhouse for a delightful stay!
Maison Chalendeix is a former 19th-century farmhouse that has been lovingly and meticulously renovated by Marc, a lover of old stone and a former builder, with the help of local craftsmen. He was committed to creating a seamless connection between the interior and the exterior. Each spacious room, through its large windows, offers a view like a painting: you’ll feel as though you’re part of the landscape! Gaëlle, a former archaeologist, has created comfortable spaces with simple, delicate decor, punctuated by antique finds that often evoke the Orient, her favorite field of research.
A charming eco-friendly renovation!
Tired of city life, we settled in Chalendeix—a hamlet with a strong spirit (whose name means “bread supply” in Occitan)—when our first child was born. We longed for wide-open spaces and a simple, authentic life, close to the forests, rivers, and the animals that inhabit them. We fell in love with this complex of buildings, a former 19th-century farmhouse. So, we had to pivot. Marc, a former construction worker and painter-decorator, gave up renovating apartments to devote himself to rebuilding the house, prioritizing local materials (granite, wood) and eco-friendly features (wood wool insulation, phytoremediation…). Gaëlle said goodbye to her prehistoric sites to immerse herself in the history of the Limousin, learn to bake bread, and care for cats, dogs, horses, and chickens…
The renovation project was a great adventure that lasted six years. It took a lot of imagination to transform a barn into a spacious, comfortable, and cozy guesthouse! Six years—enough time for us to become part of these old walls and to authentically share our experience of life here. For over 10 years now, we’ve been welcoming families, couples, friends, solo travelers, and artists every year—always with joy and curiosity!
Maison Chalendeix, a charming, authentic, and peaceful vacation rental
Maison Chalendeix welcomes you to its spacious vacation rental (sleeps 12, 180 sq. m.), rated 4 stars, for a warm and relaxing stay.
The house opens directly to the west onto a lush terrace overlooking forests and meadows, where you can relax in the sun while reading a good book or sipping an aperitif to the sound of the little stream flowing below.
Light floods into the interior spaces, which open wide onto the valley. It gently illuminates the fine materials (chestnut wood), the carefully curated antique furniture, the pieces of local craftsmanship, and the oriental rugs that make up the home’s refined, soothing, and delicate decor.
Opening onto the terrace is a spacious living room featuring several comfortable sofas for cozy evenings by the fire, a large kitchen-dining room with a spacious dining table, and a large double bedroom with an en-suite shower room. The bedroom is accessible to guests with limited mobility.
On the first floor, there are two spacious bedrooms. Each can accommodate three people and has its own bathroom (one with a shower, the other with a bathtub). That’s what makes Maison Chalendeix special: it’s perfect for groups, offering both comfort and privacy!
The two spacious bedrooms at the end of the hallway are on the second floor. In one of them, you can admire the farmhouse’s beautiful original exposed beams. Each room sleeps two and, as always, has its own en-suite bathroom.
The house is perfectly insulated, so you’ll stay nice and warm in the winter. During hot summer days, the ground floor stays cool because the house is partially underground and the vine climbing up the facade provides shade from the sun. The windows in the upstairs bedrooms are equipped with blinds that keep the heat out. Additionally, you can create refreshing drafts by opening the windows at night. Furthermore, since we are at an elevation of 510 meters, temperatures drop once the sun goes down, and the nights are cool and rejuvenating.
All the beds are 90-cm single beds that can be pushed together to form very large 180-cm double beds. The bedding is high-quality. You’ll enjoy peaceful nights filled with sweet dreams.
Household linens (dish towels) are provided, along with dish soap, dishwasher tablets, and laundry detergent—all eco-friendly, since wastewater is treated in a phytoremediation system and the plants thrive on natural products. A compost bin is located outside.
You will also have access to an ironing board and an iron. Baby gear (two travel cribs, a booster seat, a playpen insert, and a baby bathtub) is available upon request. Indoor and outdoor toys, as well as a small library, are available in the living room. The garden features a barbecue, tables, chairs, a parasol, and lounge chairs.
A hair dryer is provided in every bathroom, along with eco-friendly soap and shampoo dispensers.
Maison Chalendeix is a smoke-free property. Ashtrays are available outside.
If you’d like to bring your pet, we’d prefer to discuss this with you beforehand. We love animals—we have plenty of them here (cats, a dog, and free-range chickens). Your pet needs to get along with the other animals in the house.
Finally, we have two bicycles available.
A spacious renovated barn designed to host groups and artists for workshops or residencies!
The last building to be renovated at Maison Chalendeix was the barn. It had completely collapsed. Marc “pushed the walls” to create a beautiful workspace (92 m²) and then transferred part of the farmhouse’s roof structure to the barn. Abu Simbel! It was incredible. And so the barn became a magnificent hall with exceptional acoustics—a place conducive to artistic creation and the sharing of knowledge.
For over 10 years, Maison Chalendeix has hosted workshops (theater, singing, dance, yoga, qigong, pole dancing, clowning, martial arts), training programs (humanistic health, family constellations), seminars, artist residencies, and artistic performances, as well as acoustic concerts.
The hall can be rented on its own or together with the guesthouse, which comfortably accommodates 12 people. The five bedrooms are spacious, and each has its own bathroom. We have also set up a lovely room above the hall, with its own bathroom, perfect for organizers who want to rest or work away from the group. The large garden is accessible and can also serve as a lovely workspace on sunny days.
The room is equipped with tables, chairs, cushions, rugs, audiovisual equipment, and a small refreshment area (with a kettle and coffee maker). It is heated by a wood-burning stove, creating a cozy atmosphere.
The dry toilets are outside, right next to the room.
Meals are served in the cottage’s kitchen. If you’d prefer not to handle the meal planning yourself, you can hire our partner caterers, who will prepare delicious meals tailored to your preferences and needs. We’ll provide you with their contact information, and you can work with them to plan your itinerary.
Finally, we have a sauna that can accommodate two people per session.
Location access
The cottage is accessible by car or train. The Eymoutiers train station (Limoges-Ussel line) is 3 km away.
